Experimental and Transgenesis Unit Fish (ETUF)

FLI strengthens killifish research

The institute has recently established the Experimental and Transgenesis Unit (ETU) and its Fish subunit (ETUF), further expanding its leading expertise in the model organism Nothobranchius furzeri. The new unit is now available to researchers worldwide.

Supervised by Prof. Dr. Christoph Englert, the ETUF offers state-of-the-art infrastructure for genetic modifications, pharmacological studies, and behavioral analyses
Dr. Annekatrin Richter and Dr. Mario Baumgart, both internationally recognized killifish experts, will lead the unit’s scientific activities.

The turquoise killifish is a groundbreaking vertebrate model in aging research, replicating many aspects of human aging within a short lifespan. For more than 15 years, the FLI has been a global leader in killifish research, contributing major innovations such as the transparent “klara” line.

With the ETUF, the FLI further strengthens its international role and provides the global research community with access to its expertise and modern fish facility—accelerating discoveries in the biology of aging.
