Science & Society
Words such as "challenges" or "difficulties" are often linked to the phenomenon of our aging society. But why does the lifespan continually increase? What does this mean for society and economics? What opportunities does the demographic change offer?
With the public lecture series "Science & Society", the Leibniz Institute on Aging (FLI) and the Leibniz Research Alliance Healthy Ageing together with the Beutenberg-Campus e.V. want to add a social perspective to the aging research in Jena.

We are happy to welcome Prof. Dr. Eckart Gundelfinger from the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology (LIN), Magdeburg, in Jena.
Brain features including learning and memory are based on the performance of chemical synapses, i.e., their dynamics and their various forms of plasticity. The research of Prof. Gundelfinger is concerned with molecular and cellular mechanisms of synaptic plasticity in health and disease.
How do nerve cells in the brain communicate? How are they connected and what happens if they are wrongly wired? How is decided which information is stored and which is forgotten? How do nerve cells keep fit and what happens when they age? With the research at LIN these or similar questions should be answered.
