Organizational Structure of the FLI

The legal status of the FLI is that of a registered association (e.V.), registered in 1992 as "Institute for Molecular Biology (IMB)".

As part of a strategic reorientation, the institute was renamed the “Leibniz Institute for Age Research – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI)” in 2005.

In 2015, the name was further refined to “Leibniz Institute on Aging – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI)” to more clearly emphasize the scientific focus on the biological processes of aging.

Member of the Leibniz Association

The FLI is a member of the Leibniz Association (Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz e.V.).

Due to the importance of Leibniz Institutes for the country as a whole, they are funded jointly by the Federation and the Länder.

The purpose of the registered association is to promote research and science, education and training in the academic field of research on aging. It therefore maintains a research institute where several research groups collaborate in common research and development programs, making their results available to the public on a regular and transparent basis.

The research results obtained at the institute should be published or made available to the general public in some other way.
