Life at the Institute

Research thrives on collaboration, communication, and strong personal connections. At FLI, we believe that life at the institute extends far beyond the laboratory. Through a variety of social events, networking opportunities, sports activities, and community gatherings, employees can exchange ideas, build lasting relationships, and enjoy their time together both inside and outside of work.

Supplementary Research Activities

FLI Retreat

Once a year, FLI researchers come together for the annual FLI Retreat, held at an external venue. Over the course of several days, the retreat provides a dedicated space for scientific exchange through lectures, poster presentations, and discussions. Internationally recognized experts in aging research are invited as keynote speakers, offering new perspectives and inspiring interdisciplinary dialogue. Beyond the scientific program, the retreat also strengthens personal connections across research groups and career stages. Social activities, shared meals, and evening events create opportunities to network, exchange ideas, and build a stronger sense of community.

Network Meetings and Community Exchange

Regular meetings of FLI’s various networks and communities provide opportunities to share experiences, discuss challenges, and exchange practical advice. These include gatherings of technical assistants, postdoctoral researchers, and other professional groups, helping to foster collaboration and peer support across the institute. In addition, alumni events maintain connections with former FLI members and strengthen the institute’s international network beyond its current workforce.

After-Work Get Together

Grill & Chill

Since 2015, FLI employees have been invited to come together for Grill & Chill, a monthly barbecue held on the first Thursday of the month. In a relaxed and informal atmosphere, colleagues from research, administration, and support services can connect beyond their daily work, enjoy good food, and unwind together after work.

FLI Games Night

For those who enjoy a little friendly competition, the monthly FLI Games Night offers an opportunity to meet colleagues over a variety of board and card games. Open to all employees and welcoming both German- and English-speaking participants, the event provides a fun and informal setting to socialize, relax, and discover new favorite games.

Social Events

Seasonal Festivities

Social events are an important part of life at the institute. During the Advent season, colleagues come together for a festive Winter Party with snacks, games, music, and dancing. In summer, the annual FLI Party offers a relaxed atmosphere for meeting colleagues from across the institute, enjoying friendly competitions, and sharing a barbecue with employees and their families. Research groups also organize additional events throughout the year, such as Halloween celebrations, welcome gatherings for new team members, and other seasonal activities that strengthen our sense of community.

Staff Day for Core Administration and Science Management

Each summer, employees from FLI’s Core Administration and Science Management come together for a special Staff Day away from the workplace. Whether exploring the region on a hiking trip or discovering local sights in and around Jena, the event provides an opportunity to connect across departments, exchange ideas, and strengthen professional relationships in a relaxed setting. These shared experiences help maintain the open and collaborative atmosphere that characterizes life at the institute.

Sports & Health Activities

Sports and Active Breaks

A healthy body supports a healthy mind. At FLI, employees are encouraged to stay active and connect through shared sporting interests. Colleagues regularly come together for activities such as running and participate in local sporting events, including team runs, triathlons, and company races. These activities promote well-being, team spirit, and opportunities to connect outside the workplace. In addition to organized events, employees often form informal sports groups based on shared interests, contributing to a healthy and active institute culture.

Borrowing Sports Equipment

Since 2014, FLI employees have had access to a range of sports equipment and games for individual active breaks, team events, and retreats. The Management Board strongly supports these opportunities for movement and recreation during the workday. Equipment can be borrowed from the reception desk on weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
